Branding Photographer Manchester - Spectron LED Lighting Photoshoot
LED Lighting In Manchester
I was contacted by Katy from Spectron LED Ltd to be a Branding Photographer Manchester and photograph some of their LED letters for their website and brochure. Spectron LED Ltd are based in Salford, near Manchester Cathedral and are described as…
“Spectron LED Ltd is a supplier of commercial grade LED lighting components; illuminated built up letters; logos; trough lights and neon signs. Established in 2010 by a sign maker with over 40 years industry experience, Spectron LED has positioned itself as a market leading innovator of LED sign lighting and trough lights within the UK.
Spectron saw the potential to create bold, unique signage and display solutions soar with the rapid development of LEDs in the early 2000s; and with LED technology lasting longer than ever and being extremely energy efficient, a decision was made to combine this knowledge of sign making and love of inventing with a new found passion for LED technology.
Today, Spectron LED stocks a wide range of high quality lighting components which have been developed and tested by us. The majority of these products have been specifically selected for use within the sign making industry, though can be and often are used in other industries such as interior design, architecture and exhibitions. We also have close links with well known LED manufacturers and can source and develop non-stock items for bespoke projects with fast turnarounds.”
I was quite excited about this project. Plan A as a Branding Photographer Manchester was to photograph all seventeen letters on a wall display board, but it was decided to photograph the LED lights separately, on both a white matte background, and a semi-silk black version for the lit versions. I must admit I was instantly impressed with the range and quality of the products. I had my work cut out as a Branding Photographer Manchester to photograph thirty four versions, with separate close up details for each LED letter, plus their new Trough Light and it’s weather-proof connections and fittings in one day. But… I had Paul on hand, wiring up each letter as it went under camera (they are 12V so very safe!) It was fun working in near darkness as a Branding Photographer Manchester though as I had to black off the daylight pouring into the room using three 8ft fold out black screens, forming a three-quarter tent around the table top we were photographing on.

The company is run by the ever-chirpy Katy & Ivan, and are really busy with it all. The phone was hardly quiet all day, as Paul and I worked through the assembled legion of signs with me being Spectron’s Branding Photographer Manchester. The company works with the trade and public too, as I found out when an electrician walked in and bought a load of cabling and small LEDs for a project he was working on around the corner….literally! He arrived at an opportune moment too, as it was brew-time for this Branding Photographer Manchester, so we managed a good chat about the football! Five minutes later, we were back to work.

This lovely project was great fun to photograph as a Branding Photographer Manchester, with lots of coffee (and the odd biscuit!) during the retouching process, getting rid of cables and fingerprints, and generally making the products look almost CGI. Almost. The trough light images are composites of around four or five images, stacked together using ‘focus stacking’ to keep everything in focus where required. Hardly the most creative way of working, but certainly the best when the laws of physics are stacked against you being a Branding Photographer Manchester. I was using my trusty high resolution Nikon D810 for this shoot. An oldie, but goodie camera and keeps on producing the goods for this Branding Photographer Manchester. No need to go mirrorless just yet, as I use live view, manual focus, shooting tethered to my MacBook Pro.
